Summary

Childhood-onset schizophrenia, diagnosed before age 12, shows more genetic vulnerability and fewer environmental factors than adult-onset cases. Early onset schizophrenia may stem from greater genetic predisposition.

Background:

  • Childhood-onset schizophrenia (COS) is a rare, severe disorder continuous with adult-onset schizophrenia.
  • Very early onset diseases offer insights into homogenous patient populations and salient risk factors.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate potential etiologic factors in very early onset schizophrenia (VEOS).
  • To compare characteristics of VEOS with adult-onset schizophrenia.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of 47 patients with VEOS.
  • Comparison of neurodevelopmental abnormalities, cytogenetic anomalies, family history, obstetrical complications, and environmental stress between VEOS and later-onset cases.
