Summary

A Case conflict more effectively aids sentence reanalysis than a number conflict in German ambiguous sentences. This finding suggests Case provides clearer guidance for structural repair during language processing.

Area of Science:

  • Psycholinguistics
  • Computational Linguistics
  • Syntax

Background:

  • Garden-path sentences pose processing challenges due to initial misanalyses.
  • Ambiguous sentences require effective reanalysis mechanisms for comprehension.
  • Linguistic features like Case and number play crucial roles in sentence parsing.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the effectiveness of Case versus number conflicts in guiding garden-path reanalysis in German.
  • To investigate how different grammatical features influence sentence processing and error detection.
  • To test the predictions of the Diagnosis Model of garden-path processing.

Main Methods:

  • A speeded grammaticality judgment task was employed with German wh-sentences.
  • Participants judged the grammaticality of sentences with Case or number mismatches.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Comprehension questions assessed final understanding of ambiguous sentences.
  • Main Results:

    • Case conflicts led to faster and more frequent acceptance of disambiguated sentences compared to number conflicts.
    • Ungrammatical sentences with Case mismatches produced more false positive judgments than those with number mismatches.
    • Both types of conflicts were eventually understood correctly, indicating successful reanalysis.

    Conclusions:

    • Case conflicts are more effective cues for garden-path reanalysis than number conflicts.
    • The Diagnosis Model explains this difference: Case acts as a positive symptom guiding repair, while number is a negative symptom.
    • The transparency of reanalysis repair influences acceptance rates of ungrammatical sentences.
