Area of Science:

  • Neurology
  • Oncology
  • Ophthalmology

Background:

  • Malignant lymphoma rarely involves the cavernous sinus.
  • Cavernous sinus masses can present with diverse neurological and ophthalmological symptoms.

Observation:

  • A 71-year-old man presented with fatigue, headache, and diplopia.
  • Examination revealed reduced visual acuity and left eye ophthalmoplegia.
  • Brain MRI showed a mass extending from the cavernous sinus to the clivus, with associated lymphadenopathy and an abdominal mass.

Findings:

  • Needle biopsy of the abdominal mass confirmed non-Hodgkin lymphoma.
  • The findings suggest a systemic lymphoma with unusual cranial base involvement.

Implications:

  • Non-Hodgkin lymphoma should be considered in the differential diagnosis of cavernous sinus masses.
  • Early recognition and diagnosis are crucial for effective management of lymphoma presenting in this location.
