Area of Science:

  • Nuclear Physics
  • Metrology

Background:

  • Accurate standardization of radioactive solutions is crucial for international comparisons.
  • The 1997 BIPM (Bureau International des Poids et Mesures) comparison involved 204Tl solutions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To standardize a 204Tl solution using two distinct methods.
  • To compare the results with those obtained in an international metrology comparison.

Main Methods:

  • 4pi liquid scintillation counting with extrapolation to zero discrimination level.
  • Efficiency tracer technique using a 60Co standard solution.

Main Results:

  • The radioactivity concentration determined by 4pi liquid scintillation was 63.1+/-1.3 kBq g(-1).
  • The revised radioactivity concentration using the efficiency tracer technique was 61.8+/-1.2 kBq g(-1).

Related Experiment Videos

  • Results demonstrated good agreement with other participants in the BIPM comparison.
  • Conclusions:

    • Both standardization methods provided reliable results for the 204Tl solution.
    • The findings contribute to the accuracy and consistency of radioactivity measurements in metrology.
