Oogenesis02:07

Oogenesis

In human women, oogenesis produces one mature egg cell or ovum for every precursor cell that enters meiosis. This process differs in two unique ways from the equivalent procedure of spermatogenesis in males. First, meiotic divisions during oogenesis are asymmetric, meaning that a large oocyte (containing most of the cytoplasm) and minor polar body are produced as a result of meiosis I, and again following meiosis II. Since only oocytes will go on to form embryos if fertilized, this unequal...
Degree of Unsaturation02:05

Degree of Unsaturation

The degree of unsaturation (U), or index of hydrogen deficiency (IHD), is defined as the difference in the number of pairs of hydrogen atoms between the compound and the acyclic alkane with the same number of carbon atoms. Each double bond or ring costs two hydrogen atoms compared to a saturated analog and results in one degree of unsaturation.
The degree of unsaturation for hydrocarbons is U = (2C + 2 − H) / 2, where C is the number of carbon atoms and H is the number of hydrogen atoms.

Bone Disorders01:29

Bone Disorders

Aging and its effect on bone remodeling is the most common cause of bone disorders. In young and healthy people, bone deposition and resorption happen at an equal rate to maintain optimal bone health.
Bone deposition is also affected by the levels of sex hormones like estrogen and testosterone that promote osteoblast activity and bone matrix synthesis. When the level of these hormones decreases due to aging, it causes a reduction in bone deposition. As a result, bone resorption by osteoclasts...
Hormonal Regulation of Blood Pressure01:17

Hormonal Regulation of Blood Pressure

Endocrinal or hormonal intervention in the cardiovascular system is predominantly exerted by the catecholamines - epinephrine and norepinephrine, as well as a slew of hormones that interact with renal function to modulate blood volume.
Epinephrine and Norepinephrine
The adrenal medulla releases epinephrine and norepinephrine, catecholamines that enhance and extend the sympathetic or "fight or flight" physiological response. These hormones escalate heart rate and the force of contraction while...
Hormonal Regulation of the Menstrual Cycle01:22

Hormonal Regulation of the Menstrual Cycle

The ovarian cycle regulates endometrial changes throughout a single menstrual cycle via the coordinated action of gonadotrophin-releasing hormone (GnRH) and gonadotrophins.
At puberty, GnRH begins a pulsatile release pattern, which triggers the anterior pituitary gland to secrete follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH). The frequency and amplitude of GnRH pulses vary across the menstrual cycle, with faster pulses favoring LH release and slower pulses favoring FSH release.
Menopause01:28

Menopause

Menopause, a natural biological process marking the end of a woman's fertility, typically occurs between the fifth and sixth decade of life. This phase is characterized by the exhaustion of the ovarian follicle pool, leading to less responsive ovaries despite the high levels of Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH) and Luteinizing Hormone (LH). The consequential decrease in estrogen production results in symptoms like hot flashes, heavy sweating, headaches, hair loss, muscle pains, vaginal...

Summary

Aging does not appear to decrease delta6-desaturase activity in females, contrary to findings in males. Type 2 diabetes, not menopausal status, was associated with altered desaturase function in women.

Area of Science:

  • Biochemistry
  • Human Physiology
  • Nutritional Science

Background:

  • Aging's impact on delta6-desaturase activity is established in males but unclear in females.
  • Delta-desaturase enzymes are crucial for fatty acid metabolism and have been linked to metabolic health.
  • Understanding these enzymes' function in aging women, especially with type 2 diabetes, is important.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the influence of aging and type 2 diabetes on delta6- and delta5-desaturase activities in women.
  • To compare desaturase function between pre- and post-menopausal women, and between those with and without type 2 diabetes.
  • To determine if menopausal status or diabetic status is a significant factor in desaturase activity.

Main Methods:

  • A 2x2 factorial study design involving 37 pre- and post-menopausal women, categorized by normoglycemic status or type 2 diabetes.
  • Analysis of serum phospholipid fatty acid profiles to assess desaturase activity indices.
  • Comparison of diabetic control indicators, estrogen levels, and dietary intake.

Main Results:

  • No significant differences in desaturase activity were found based on menopausal status.
  • Women with type 2 diabetes showed altered fatty acid profiles, suggesting greater delta6-desaturase activity compared to controls.
  • Dietary intake did not differ between groups, indicating results were not due to dietary factors.

Conclusions:

  • Delta6-desaturase function in women is associated with diabetic status, not menopausal status.
  • Aging does not appear to decrease desaturase function in females, unlike in males.
  • These findings highlight the complex interplay between metabolic health, fatty acid metabolism, and aging in women.
