Near-infrared spectroscopy of galaxy MS 1512-cB58 reveals its star formation rate and metallicity. This study provides insights into the properties of distant Lyman-break galaxies.

    Area of Science:

    • Astronomy
    • Astrophysics
    • Spectroscopy

    Background:

    • MS 1512-cB58 is a z=2.72 galaxy strongly lensed by the foreground cluster MS 1512+36.
    • This makes it an ideal target for studying the rest-frame optical properties of Lyman-break galaxies.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To present moderate-resolution, near-infrared spectroscopy of MS 1512-cB58.
    • To characterize the physical properties of this lensed galaxy using commissioning data from the Keck II telescope's NIRSPEC instrument.

    Main Methods:

    • Obtained near-infrared spectra of MS 1512-cB58 using the NIRSPEC instrument on the Keck II telescope.
    • Analyzed emission and absorption lines, continuum signal, and Balmer line ratios to determine redshift, extinction, star formation rate, and metallicity.

    Related Experiment Videos

    Main Results:

    • Detected multiple emission lines (Halpha, [N ii], [O i], He i, [O iii], Hbeta, Hgamma, [O ii]) and continuum signal between 1.29-2.46 µm.
    • Inferred a redshift of z=2.7290+/-0.0007, an extinction E(B-V) of 0.27, and a star formation rate of 620+/-18 M☉ yr⁻¹.
    • Determined a virial mass of 1.2x10¹⁰ M☉, an oxygen abundance of 13 solar, and a high nitrogen abundance.

    Conclusions:

    • The inferred high nitrogen abundance suggests the presence of an older stellar population in MS 1512-cB58.
    • Near-infrared spectroscopy with NIRSPEC is effective for detailed studies of lensed Lyman-break galaxies.
