Background:

Limited research exists on long-term quality of life post-Vertical Banded Gastroplasty (VBG).
Severe obesity poses significant health challenges impacting overall well-being.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate the long-term quality of life outcomes in patients who underwent Vertical Banded Gastroplasty (VBG).
To identify correlations between weight loss and improvements in various quality of life domains after VBG.

A cohort of 100 patients with severe obesity (mean BMI 41.7 kg/m²) were interviewed 60 months post-VBG.

No fatal outcomes were reported; however, complications included pulmonary embolus (9 patients) and stomal stenosis requiring reoperation (10 patients).
Of 89 patients retaining the gastroplasty, 65 achieved >40% excess weight loss, defining surgical success.
Significant improvements in quality of life were observed, including reduced depression, back pain, and arterial hypertension, alongside enhanced professional satisfaction and social, physical, and sexual activity, all linked to weight loss.

Conclusions:

Vertical Banded Gastroplasty (VBG) generally yields favorable long-term quality of life improvements for patients with severe obesity.
Patients require comprehensive preoperative counseling regarding potential persistent side effects such as vomiting, esophagitis, gastritis, dietary restrictions, and prolonged meal times.
