Summary

This study reports the first case of elastofibroma in the neck, a benign tumor typically found on the chest wall. Imaging revealed an unusual fat preponderance due to its location within neck fat.

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Radiology
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Elastofibromas are rare, benign soft tissue tumors.
  • Typically, they occur as slow-growing masses on the chest wall, often beneath the scapula.

Observation:

  • This report details the first documented instance of an elastofibroma occurring in the neck region.
  • The lesion presented with atypical imaging characteristics, notably a significant fat component.

Findings:

  • Computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) demonstrated a marked preponderance of fat within the lesion.
  • This fat preponderance was attributed to the elastofibroma originating within the subcutaneous or deeper adipose tissue of the neck.

Implications:

  • This case expands the known anatomical distribution of elastofibromas.
  • Highlights the importance of considering elastofibroma in the differential diagnosis of neck masses with fatty components, even when the location is atypical.
