Summary

Schizotypy, a personality trait linked to schizophrenia, did not show deficits in verbal or auditory working memory in this study. These findings challenge prior assumptions about cognitive impairments in individuals at risk for schizophrenia.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate verbal memory and auditory working memory functioning in individuals with schizotypy.
  • To determine if schizotypal personality traits are associated with observable memory deficits.
  • To compare memory performance between schizotypal subjects and normal controls.

Main Methods:

  • A psychometric assessment using the Perceptual Aberration Scale identified 31 schizotypal subjects.

    • The study did not find evidence of verbal or auditory working memory deficits in schizotypal individuals.
    • These results suggest that schizotypy, as measured, may not be associated with the specific memory impairments observed in schizophrenia.
    • Further research is needed to understand the relationship between working memory processes and the schizotypy construct.
