Area of Science:

  • Infectious Diseases
  • Evidence-Based Medicine
  • Systematic Reviews

Background:

  • Leptospirosis is a significant global health concern requiring effective interventions.
  • Current clinical evidence on leptospirosis interventions needs comprehensive evaluation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To systematically review existing clinical evidence on interventions for leptospirosis.
  • To evaluate the effectiveness and safety of interventions using systematic reviews of randomized controlled trials (RCTs).

Main Methods:

  • Searched major databases including EMBASE, LILACS, MEDLINE, and Cochrane registers.
  • Included systematic reviews of RCTs involving patients with leptospirosis or those at risk.
  • Interventions included antibiotics and vaccines for prevention and treatment.

Main Results:

  • Identified 163 studies, but only two selected were protocols for systematic reviews, not full reviews.
  • One protocol focused on antibiotic treatment, the other on antibiotic prevention for leptospirosis.
  • No complete systematic reviews on leptospirosis interventions were found.

Conclusions:

  • There is a lack of comprehensive systematic reviews on leptospirosis interventions.
  • The effectiveness and safety of leptospirosis prevention and treatment strategies require further investigation.
