Summary

Alpha interferon (IFN-alpha) treatment showed potential in stabilizing neurological signs in an Alzheimer's disease (AD) patient. While a clinical trial revealed no significant neurophysiological changes, quality of life improved and mortality decreased in AD patients treated with IFN-alpha.

Background:

  • Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common cause of dementia with unknown etiology and non-specific treatments.
  • Interferons (IFN) possess antiviral, antiproliferative, and immunomodulatory effects, potentially mediated via opiate and dopaminergic systems in the central nervous system.
  • Evidence suggests a link between AD, prion diseases, and viral infections, with a compromised IFN system observed in AD patients.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) treated with alpha interferon (IFN-alpha).
  • To evaluate the efficacy of IFN-alpha in managing neurological and quality of life aspects of AD.

Main Methods:

  • Case report of a 69-year-old male with definite AD treated intrathecally with alpha leucocytic IFN, initially suspected of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease.
