Area of Science:

  • Medical practice and physician health
  • Occupational health and well-being
  • Gender studies in medicine

Background:

  • Women physicians often report positive health and life satisfaction.
  • However, some literature indicates higher rates of depression, anxiety, marital issues, and substance abuse among this demographic.
  • Understanding the unique challenges faced by women physicians is crucial for improving their professional lives.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the health, stress levels, job satisfaction, and experiences of abuse among women physicians.
  • To identify key stressors contributing to the challenges faced by women in medical practice.
  • To compare perceptions between different physician specialties and demographic groups.

Main Methods:

  • A mixed-methods approach combining a quantitative survey of 196 women physicians with qualitative focus groups involving 48 additional physicians.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Participants represented various specialties, including family practice.
  • Data collected included demographics, self-perceived physical and mental health, stress levels, job satisfaction, and experiences of workplace abuse.
  • Main Results:

    • While most women physicians reported good physical health, nearly half experienced high stress, and 44% felt mentally tired.
    • Seventy-three percent reported verbal abuse and 33% reported physical assault at work.
    • Physicians over 50 or with older children reported better mental health. Family physicians were more likely to be divorced/separated/widowed than specialists.

    Conclusions:

    • Women physicians face significant workplace stressors, including high expectations, multiple roles, and challenging work environments.
    • Addressing these issues requires both personal coping strategies and systemic changes within the medical field.
    • Sharing experiences and solutions among women physicians can drive positive change and improve overall well-being.
