Diffuse panbronchiolitis (DPB) is a rare lung disease typically found in Asians. This case report details DPB in a non-Asian Brazilian, expanding its known geographic and ethnic distribution.

Area of Science:

  • Pulmonology
  • Rare Diseases
  • Epidemiology

Background:

  • Diffuse panbronchiolitis (DPB) is a chronic airway inflammatory disease.
  • DPB has been predominantly reported in Asian populations, particularly Japanese individuals.

Observation:

  • A case of DPB is presented in a Brazilian citizen of non-Asian descent.
  • The patient had no history of international travel.

Findings:

  • The clinical, radiographic, and histological findings in this case were consistent with previously described DPB.
  • This presentation suggests DPB is not exclusive to Asian populations.

Implications:

  • DPB should be considered in the differential diagnosis of airflow limitation with nodular opacities, even in Western countries.
