Airway eosinophils can act as antigen-presenting cells (APCs) in allergic diseases. These cells process inhaled allergens and migrate to lymph nodes to activate T cells, contributing to immune responses.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate if eosinophils in the endobronchial lumen can function as APCs for inhaled antigens in vivo.
  • To determine the migratory capacity and antigen-presenting capabilities of airway-derived eosinophils.

Main Methods:

  • Eosinophils were recovered from airways of sensitized mice after antigen challenge or from IL-5 transgenic mice.
  • Fluorescently labeled eosinophils were instilled intratracheally into recipient mice.
  • Expression of MHC class II, CD80, and CD86 was assessed; in vitro and in vivo antigen presentation assays were performed.
