A case of hypersensitivity pneumonitis (HP) in a sausage factory worker was identified. Exposure to mold on salamis likely caused this occupational lung disease, successfully treated with steroids and antigen avoidance.

Area of Science:

  • Pulmonary Medicine
  • Occupational Health
  • Immunology

Background:

  • Hypersensitivity pneumonitis (HP) results from immune responses to inhaled antigens.
  • New etiological agents and associated diseases are continually being identified.

Observation:

  • A 56-year-old woman presented with dyspnea and cough.
  • Her occupation involved removing dust from salamis during their curing process.
  • Initial chest X-ray was normal, but HRCT showed a mosaic pattern.

Findings:

  • Pulmonary function tests indicated a predominantly obstructive pattern.
  • Lung biopsy confirmed HP.
  • Penicillium spp. isolated from salami dust was identified as the likely cause, termed "salami worker's lung".

Related Experiment Videos

Implications:

  • This case highlights Penicillium spp. as an occupational antigen causing HP.
  • Prompt diagnosis and management, including antigen avoidance and corticosteroids, led to patient improvement.
  • Recognizing "salami worker's lung" expands the spectrum of occupational HP.
