Summary

This is the first reported case of a rare ureteral rhabdomyosarcoma. Initial signs mimicked a benign polyp, but biopsy confirmed malignant embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma.

Background:

  • Rhabdomyosarcoma is a malignant tumor frequently encountered in the genitourinary system.
  • Common sites include the bladder, prostate, vagina, and paratesticular region, accounting for 20-25% of genitourinary malignancies.

Observation:

  • A tumor presented with radiographic and ureteroscopic findings suggestive of a benign fibroepithelial polyp.
  • The lesion was located in the ureter, an extremely rare site for rhabdomyosarcoma.

Findings:

  • Ureteroscopic biopsy and subsequent nephroureterectomy definitively diagnosed the tumor as an embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma.
  • This represents the first documented instance of rhabdomyosarcoma originating in the ureter.

Implications:

  • Highlights the importance of histological examination for accurate diagnosis, even with seemingly benign presentations.
  • Expands the known anatomical distribution of genitourinary rhabdomyosarcomas.
  • May influence diagnostic and treatment strategies for rare genitourinary tumors.
