Summary

Long chain triglyceride (LCT) emulsion intake in rats caused temporary hyperlipaemia, useful for testing lipid-lowering drugs. Chronic LCT intake created animal models for studying atherosclerosis, obesity, and dyslipidemias.

Area of Science:

  • Biochemistry
  • Pharmacology
  • Animal Models

Background:

  • Lipid disorders are linked to cardiovascular diseases.
  • Investigating animal models for dyslipidemia is crucial for understanding disease mechanisms and testing treatments.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the impact of acute long chain triglyceride (LCT) emulsion ingestion on plasma triglyceride (TG) and total cholesterol (TC) levels in Wistar rats.
  • To compare LCT emulsion's effects with Triton WR-1339 induced hyperlipidemia.
  • To establish chronic LCT emulsion intake as a model for hypertriglyceridemia, hypercholesterolemia, and obesity.

Main Methods:

  • Acute oral administration of LCT emulsion to Wistar rats.
  • Induction of hyperlipidemia using Triton WR-1339 injection.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Chronic administration of LCT emulsion to establish an animal model.
  • Main Results:

    • Triton WR-1339 effectively induced hypercholesterolemia but not human-like hypertriglyceridemia.
    • Acute LCT emulsion intake resulted in transient hyperlipaemia with values comparable to human hyperlipaemic subjects.
    • Chronic LCT emulsion intake successfully modeled hypertriglyceridemia, hypercholesterolemia, and obesity in experimental animals.

    Conclusions:

    • LCT emulsion is suitable for inducing transient hyperlipaemia, serving as a model for testing antilipaemic treatments.
    • The chronic LCT emulsion model is valuable for investigating atherosclerosis pathogenesis and pharmacological treatments for obesity and dyslipidemias.
