Area of Science:

  • Cardiology
  • Geriatrics
  • Internal Medicine

Background:

  • Heart failure is a growing concern in the elderly population.
  • Improved survival from hypertension, myocardial infarction, and stroke increases the number of older individuals at risk.
  • Distinguishing normal aging from pathological causes of heart failure is crucial.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review the key aspects of congestive heart failure in the elderly.
  • To emphasize the differences between normal aging and disease-induced heart failure.
  • To discuss the specific pathophysiology and symptoms of heart failure in aged patients.

Main Methods:

  • Literature review focusing on heart failure in the elderly.
  • Analysis of age-related changes in cardiovascular physiology.
  • Examination of diagnostic and therapeutic challenges.

Main Results:

  • Heart failure prevalence is rising in older populations.
  • Elderly patients exhibit distinct physiological and symptomatic profiles.
  • Diastolic ventricular dysfunction is a common and complex issue in aged individuals.

Conclusions:

  • Heart failure management in the elderly requires careful consideration of age-related changes.
  • Diastolic dysfunction presents significant diagnostic and therapeutic hurdles.
  • Further research is needed to optimize care for older adults with heart failure.
