Summary

Aneurysmal bone cysts (ABCs) are rare, tumor-like lesions. Inappropriate surgical margins led to a 19.5% recurrence rate in this study, highlighting the need for stage-dependent surgical procedures.

Area of Science:

  • Orthopedic Oncology
  • Skeletal Pathology
  • Surgical Oncology

Background:

  • Aneurysmal bone cysts (ABCs) are uncommon tumor-like bone lesions affecting any skeletal site.
  • They predominantly occur in adolescents and young adults (10-20 years).
  • Accurate diagnosis requires advanced imaging and expert pathological evaluation due to variable presentation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the outcomes of surgically treated aneurysmal bone cysts.
  • To analyze recurrence rates and identify contributing factors.
  • To emphasize the importance of tailored surgical approaches based on lesion activity.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of 41 surgically treated aneurysmal bone cysts.
  • Classification of lesions into latent, active, and aggressive subtypes.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Evaluation of surgical procedures, morbidity, and recurrence rates.
  • Main Results:

    • A recurrence rate of 19.5% was observed in the study cohort.
    • All recurrences were linked to inadequate surgical margins during the primary operation.
    • Morbidity associated with surgical treatment was relatively low, even for extensive lesions.

    Conclusions:

    • Therapy for aneurysmal bone cysts necessitates preoperative staging to guide stage-dependent surgical procedures.
    • Surgical radicality and lesion aggressiveness are critical factors influencing local relapse risk.
    • Achieving appropriate surgical margins is paramount to minimize recurrence.
