Background:

  • Melatonin plays a role in human physiology and pathophysiology.
  • Limited data exists on melatonin interactions with sexual steroids and neuroendocrine systems in postmenopausal women.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate overnight urinary 6-sulfatoxymelatonin (6-SMT) excretion in postmenopausal women.
  • To compare melatonin levels across different health groups: insomnia, hyperprolactinemia, depression, obesity, and controls.

Main Methods:

  • Radioimmunoassay was used to measure overnight urinary 6-SMT.
  • Sixty postmenopausal women were divided into specific health condition groups and a control group.

Main Results:

  • Significantly higher 6-SMT levels were observed in women with depression compared to controls.
