Background:

  • Interproximal periodontal defects pose challenges in regenerative therapy.
  • Guided tissue regeneration (GTR) using expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (e-PTFE) membranes is a common treatment approach.
  • Controlled drug delivery systems are being explored to enhance GTR outcomes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the long-term biological and clinical effects of tetracycline-releasing fibers combined with e-PTFE membranes in GTR for periodontal defects.

Main Methods:

  • A randomized controlled trial involving 15 patients with paired interproximal periodontal defects.
  • Test sites received e-PTFE membranes with tetracycline fibers; control sites received e-PTFE membranes alone.
  • Microbiological analysis and clinical parameters (plaque index, gingival index, pocket depth, attachment level) were assessed at baseline and one year post-surgery.

  • No statistically significant differences in periodontal pathogen levels were observed between the test and control groups at one year.
