Following protease inhibitor therapy, HIV-infected gay or bisexual men showed increased unprotected sex. Continued monitoring and intervention are crucial for this population to prevent HIV transmission.

Area of Science:

  • Infectious Diseases
  • Public Health
  • Virology

Background:

  • Protease inhibitor (PI) therapy has transformed HIV management.
  • Understanding sexual risk behaviors in HIV-infected individuals on PI therapy is critical for public health.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate changes in sexual activity and unprotected sexual intercourse among HIV-infected patients before and after initiating protease inhibitor therapy.

Main Methods:

  • Analysis of data from the French prospective SEROCO Study.
  • Included 191 HIV-infected patients with follow-up data before and after PI initiation.
  • Collected information on sexual practices and partner serostatus.

Main Results:

  • No overall increase in sexual activity or unprotected intercourse was observed post-PI initiation.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Gay and bisexual men were three times more likely to engage in unprotected sex with HIV-negative or unknown serostatus partners.
  • Heterosexual men and women showed non-significant decreases in unprotected intercourse.
  • Conclusions:

    • A potential relapse in sexual risk behaviors among some HIV-infected gay or bisexual men is indicated.
    • Continued monitoring and immediate secondary preventive interventions are necessary.
    • No association found between plasma viral load and unprotected sex post-PI initiation.
