Summary

Pediatric poisoning exposures in Taiwan, primarily accidental ingestions of household products and medications, are a significant concern. Prevention efforts should focus on education and child-resistant packaging for young children.

Background:

Poisoning is a major cause of child morbidity and mortality globally.
Limited data exists on pediatric poisoning exposures in Taiwan.

Purpose of the Study:

To analyze pediatric poisoning exposure data from Taiwan's National Poison Centre (NPC).
To inform poison prevention strategies for children under 19.

Main Methods:

Retrospective analysis of 5,812 telephone inquiries to NPC-Taiwan (July 1985 - December 1993).
Data analyzed included age, sex, exposure reason, route, substances, and outcomes.

Main Results:

Males accounted for 59% of exposures.
Accidental oral exposures (77.7%) involved household products, benzodiazepines, and pesticides.

Conclusions:

Accidental poisoning from household products and medications is a significant issue for young children.
