Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the expression of proto-oncogenes (c-myc and c-jun) during fracture repair.
  • To determine if proto-oncogenes are involved in osteogenesis or chondrogenesis in the fracture callus.

Main Methods:

  • Closed tibial fractures were created in New Zealand White (NZW) rabbits.
  • Fracture calluses were collected at 1 and 2 weeks post-fracture.
  • Immunocytochemistry was used to localize the expression of c-myc and c-jun.

  • Proto-oncogenes were expressed in osteogenic cells of the periosteum, endosteum, Haversian canal, and new bone trabeculae.

Conclusions:

  • Proto-oncogenes (c-myc and c-jun) are expressed in osteogenic cells during fracture healing, suggesting a role in post-fracture osteogenesis.
  • Proto-oncogenes do not appear to be involved in the chondrogenic processes of endochondral bone formation.
  • Monitoring proto-oncogene expression could potentially serve as an early diagnostic tool for delayed fracture healing.
