Summary

Dysembryoplastic neuroepithelial tumors (DNETs) in young patients often cause drug-resistant epilepsy. Surgical treatment can lead to seizure freedom and aid in histological diagnosis.

Area of Science:

  • Neuro-oncology
  • Epileptology
  • Surgical Neurology

Background:

  • Dysembryoplastic neuroepithelial tumors (DNETs) are typically diagnosed in young individuals.
  • These tumors often present with complex partial seizures refractory to medical management.
  • DNETs are characterized by stable lesions and distinct histological features.

Observation:

  • A review of six patients with DNETs revealed seizure onset between 7 and 27 years.
  • Lesions were predominantly in the temporal lobe, exhibiting specific CT and MRI characteristics.
  • Surgical resection was performed in all cases, with varying degrees of tumor removal.

Findings:

  • Histopathological analysis showed oligodendroglial-like cells and glioneural components.
  • Four out of six patients achieved seizure freedom post-surgery.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Subtotal resection was associated with seizure control in two cases.
  • Implications:

    • Surgical intervention is crucial for both histological diagnosis and effective epilepsy management in DNET patients.
    • While imaging features are nonspecific, clinical and pathological data are vital for diagnosis.
    • Early surgical consideration may improve outcomes for DNET-associated epilepsy.
