Summary

Epileptic patients taking vigabatrin have a significantly higher risk of developing visual field defects (VFDs). The total dose of vigabatrin ingested correlates with VFD severity, with doses of 1500g or more posing a notable risk.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess visual function in epileptic patients treated with vigabatrin.
  • To compare visual function in vigabatrin-treated patients versus those on other antiepileptics.
  • To investigate the relationship between vigabatrin dosage and visual field defect (VFD) severity.

Main Methods:

  • 21 epileptic patients with prior or current vigabatrin use were compared to 11 controls.
  • Static perimetry was performed using Humphrey visual field analyser.
  • Visual field defects were quantified as a percentage of defect in both eyes.
