Area of Science:

  • Psychiatry
  • Clinical Psychology

Background:

  • Multiple Personality Disorder (MPD), now known as Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID), is a diagnosis associated with clinical deterioration in some patients.
  • Previous observations suggest a concerning trend following MPD/DID diagnosis.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the frequency of suicide attempts in patients diagnosed with MPD compared to a control group.
  • To assess changes in suicide attempt rates before and after MPD diagnosis and treatment.

Main Methods:

  • A survey was conducted on 20 individuals diagnosed with MPD who had experienced and relinquished false memories.
  • Suicide attempt data from 12 MPD patients were compared with 12 hospitalized mood disorder patients, matched for age and sex.

Main Results:

Related Experiment Videos

  • Patients diagnosed with MPD reported more suicide attempts after their diagnosis than before.
  • The comparison group of mood disorder patients showed a decrease in suicide attempts after hospitalization.
  • Statistical analysis (Chi(2)=20.177, P<0.001) indicated a significant difference in suicide attempt trends between the groups.

Conclusions:

  • The study findings suggest that the diagnosis of MPD and the application of recovered memory treatments may be detrimental.
  • While the study samples were highly selected, the results align with existing literature indicating potential harm associated with MPD diagnosis and treatment.
