Background:

  • Stuttering is a complex speech disorder with unclear etiopathogenesis.
  • Previous research suggests potential neurological underpinnings of stuttering.
  • Understanding electrophysiological correlates can offer insights into stuttering mechanisms.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate electrophysiological factors in evoked potentials and electroencephalography (EEG) related to stuttering.
  • To compare brain activity between stuttering and non-stuttering individuals aged 6-25.
  • To explore potential organic etiopathogenesis of stuttering.

Main Methods:

  • Evaluated 37 stuttering and 25 non-stuttering subjects (age, sex, education matched).
  • Utilized visual evoked potentials (VEPs), auditory evoked potentials (AEPs), event-related potentials (P300), WISC-IQ, and EEG.
  • Analyzed VEP P100 amplitude, AEP latencies, event-related potentials, and EEG dominant rhythm and abnormalities.

Main Results:

  • Stutterers showed reduced VEP P100 amplitude and prolonged AEP latencies (I, III, V, I-III, I-V).
  • No significant abnormalities in event-related potentials (P200, N200, P300) were found.
  • Stutterers exhibited slower dominant EEG rhythm, significant interhemispheric asymmetry, and higher rates of pathological EEG (54%) including epileptiform activity (16.2%).

Conclusions:

  • Electrophysiological abnormalities in VEPs and AEPs are associated with stuttering.
  • EEG findings indicate altered brain activity and asymmetry in stutterers.
  • The observed neurophysiological differences suggest a possible organic basis for stuttering.
