Summary

The prevalence of primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) in Crete was 2.80%, with a significant portion of POAG patients exhibiting normal intraocular pressure. Exfoliation glaucoma was also found to be prevalent in the study population.

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Public Health
  • Epidemiology

Background:

  • Glaucoma is a leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide.
  • Primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) is the most common type of glaucoma.
  • Understanding the prevalence of POAG in specific populations is crucial for public health planning.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the prevalence of primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) in a randomly selected population on the island of Crete.
  • To investigate the presence of Pseudoexfoliation syndrome (PEX) and pseudoexfoliative glaucoma (PEXG).

Main Methods:

  • A randomized in situ study was conducted across 18 villages in Crete between 1993 and 1998.
  • Approximately 5% of the population in each village, based on the 1991 census, was sampled.

Related Experiment Videos

  • POAG was diagnosed based on characteristic optic disc morphology, nerve fiber layer defects, and visual field defects.
  • Main Results:

    • The overall prevalence of glaucoma in Crete was found to be 2.80%.
    • Among POAG patients, 9.67% had an intraocular pressure (IOP) below 21 mm Hg, and 25.80% had Pseudoexfoliation syndrome (PEX).
    • The prevalence of ocular hypertension without glaucoma was 6.58%, with a ratio of hypertensive glaucoma to simple ocular hypertension of 1:2.6.

    Conclusions:

    • The prevalence of POAG and exfoliation glaucoma is notably high in the population of Crete.
    • Further research is recommended to refine diagnostic criteria for earlier detection.
    • Improved healthcare system organization is needed for more efficient glaucoma management.
