Background:

Perceptual organization involves integrating visual information.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate developmental patterns in perceptual organization.
To explore two dimensions: local-integrative and action-perception.
To examine the development of spatial integration and contextual modulation.

Main Methods:

Utilized a contour integration task to assess spatial integration.
Employed the Ebbinghaus illusion to evaluate contextual modulation.
Compared the developmental rates of the perceptual (ventral stream) and action (dorsal stream) systems.

Main Results:

Spatial integration appears to develop slowly in children.
Children showed reduced contextual modulation, as evidenced by the Ebbinghaus illusion.
The perceptual system develops more slowly than the action system.

Conclusions:

Long-range neuronal connectivity in the posterior brain pole is underdeveloped in young children.
The ventral visual pathway supporting perceptual organization matures gradually.
Developmental delays in perceptual organization highlight ongoing neural maturation.
