Area of Science:

  • Urologic Surgery
  • Minimally Invasive Procedures
  • Oncology

Background:

  • Laparoscopy is increasingly used for complex oncologic procedures.
  • Evaluating preliminary experience with laparoscopic radical prostatectomy is crucial.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the feasibility and outcomes of laparoscopic radical prostatectomy.
  • To compare short-term oncologic and functional results with open surgery.

Main Methods:

  • Forty-three patients underwent laparoscopic radical prostatectomy using a five-trocar technique.
  • Surgical steps mimicked traditional retropubic prostatectomy with transperitoneal dissection.
  • Vesicourethral reconstruction varied between interrupted sutures and running sutures.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Median operating time was 4.3 hours post-learning curve; median catheterization was 4 days.
  • 84% of patients achieved full continence at 1 month postoperatively.
  • Oncologic outcomes showed 27.9% positive margins, but PSA levels were <0.1 ng/mL at 1 month.

Conclusions:

  • Laparoscopic radical prostatectomy is a standardized, reproducible procedure.
  • Short-term oncologic and functional efficacy is equivalent to open surgery.
  • The technique offers potential for improved dissection and reduced morbidity.
