Area of Science:

  • Obstetrics and Gynecology
  • Pain Management
  • Sleep Science

Background:

  • Pregnancy-related back pain affects over one-third of women.
  • Backache is a common complaint during gestation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate interventions for pregnancy backache.
  • To assess treatments aimed at preventing or reducing back pain in pregnancy.

Main Methods:

  • Systematic review of randomized controlled trials.
  • Searched Cochrane Pregnancy and Childbirth Group and Cochrane Controlled Trials Registers.
  • Independent data extraction and quality assessment by two reviewers.

Main Results:

  • One cross-over trial involving 109 women was analyzed.

Related Experiment Videos

  • A specially shaped abdominal pillow (Ozzlo pillow) was compared to a standard pillow.
  • Women reported reduced pain with the Ozzlo pillow (OR 0.32, 95% CI 0.18 to 0.58).
  • Conclusions:

    • Specially shaped pillows show promise in reducing late-pregnancy back pain.
    • These pillows may also contribute to improved sleep quality.
    • Further research into pregnancy pain relief interventions is warranted.
