Providing extra breastfeeding support increases the likelihood that mothers will continue exclusive breastfeeding for at least two months. This enhanced support is beneficial for maternal and infant health outcomes.

Background:

  • Exclusive breastfeeding rates at three to four months remain low globally.
  • Certain demographic groups, including young mothers and those with lower socioeconomic status or education, exhibit lower breastfeeding rates.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the impact of additional breastfeeding support interventions on breastfeeding duration and exclusivity.

Main Methods:

  • Systematic review of controlled trials comparing enhanced breastfeeding support with usual maternity care.
  • Searches conducted across multiple databases including Cochrane, Medline, Embase, and Cinahl.
  • Data extraction and analysis performed by two independent reviewers.

Main Results:

  • Thirteen trials were included in the review.
  • Extra support reduced the risk of stopping exclusive breastfeeding within two months (RR 0.83, 95% CI 0.72-0.96).
  • Extra support also reduced the risk of stopping any breastfeeding within two months (RR 0.74, 95% CI 0.65-0.86).

Conclusions:

  • Professional breastfeeding support significantly increases the duration of exclusive breastfeeding until at least two months.
  • Providing enhanced support to nine women can result in one additional mother breastfeeding exclusively for two months.
