Area of Science:

  • Psychiatry and Pharmacology
  • Clinical Neuroscience
  • Evidence-Based Medicine

Background:

  • Antipsychotic medications are the primary treatment for schizophrenia.
  • Oral administration poses challenges in quantifying compliance and adherence.
  • Depot injections, including haloperidol decanoate, offer long-term maintenance treatment options.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate haloperidol decanoate against oral antipsychotics and other depot preparations for schizophrenia.
  • To assess clinical, social, and economic outcomes of haloperidol decanoate treatment.

Main Methods:

  • Systematic review of randomized controlled trials identified through comprehensive database searches.
  • Inclusion criteria focused on schizophrenia patients comparing haloperidol decanoate with oral antipsychotics or other depots.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Outcomes assessed included mortality, global function, mental state, relapse, hospital admission, adverse effects, and treatment acceptability.
  • Main Results:

    • Haloperidol decanoate significantly reduced early study withdrawal and improved mental state compared to placebo.
    • No significant differences were observed between haloperidol decanoate and oral haloperidol in global impression, mental state, or side effects.
    • Comparisons with other depot antipsychotics revealed no differences in key outcomes like death, global impression, mental state, behavior, or side effects.

    Conclusions:

    • Haloperidol decanoate demonstrates potential benefits over placebo for schizophrenia symptom and behavior management, though supporting data is limited.
    • There are no clear differences between haloperidol decanoate and its oral counterpart, making administration choice a matter of clinical judgment.
    • Individual patient preference and tailored choices are recommended when selecting between haloperidol decanoate and other depot formulations due to lack of discernible differences.
