Summary

Community screening for vision problems in older adults does not improve vision. This review found no evidence that mass screening of asymptomatic seniors leads to better eyesight outcomes.

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Gerontology
  • Public Health

Background:

  • Multicomponent screening aims to broadly assess older adults.
  • The effectiveness of vision screening within these programs depends on demonstrable vision improvement.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the impact of mass screening for visual impairment in older populations on their vision.

Main Methods:

  • Systematic review of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) involving community-based screening for vision impairment in individuals aged 65 and above.
  • Searches included major databases up to April 1998; data extraction and quality assessment were performed independently.

Main Results:

  • Five trials with 3494 participants assessed vision outcomes over 2-4 years, primarily using self-reported measures.

Related Experiment Videos

  • No significant difference in reported visual problems was observed between intervention and control groups (RR 1.03, 95% CI 0.92-1.15).
  • Conclusions:

    • Current evidence does not support community-based screening of asymptomatic older individuals for improving vision.
