Background:

  • Searched Cochrane Controlled Trials Register, MEDLINE, and Popline up to January 1999.
  • Included randomized trials comparing routine antibiotic prophylaxis versus no routine prophylaxis.
  • Data extraction and trial quality assessment were performed independently by two reviewers.

  • One study with 140 women was included; a second trial was excluded due to high loss to follow-up.
