Summary

Obesity may contribute to Chilaiditi's syndrome, a condition where the intestine is found above the diaphragm. This study suggests increased intra-abdominal fat in obese individuals, particularly men, may play a role in its development.

Background:

  • Hepatodiaphragmatic interposition (HDI), also known as Chilaiditi's syndrome, is more common in elderly males.
  • The exact cause of HDI remains unclear.
  • Intra-abdominal fat deposition may widen the space between the liver and colon, potentially contributing to HDI.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between obesity and the occurrence of Chilaiditi's syndrome.
  • To explore potential reasons for the higher prevalence of HDI in men.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of 850 abdominal CT scans.
  • Identification of patients with hepatodiaphragmatic interposition (HDI) of the colon or small intestine.
  • Recording of current and highest past Body Mass Index (BMI) for identified patients.
