Summary

Alpha bursts during REM sleep occur more frequently in later sleep cycles and during phasic periods. These bursts, distinct from arousals, may facilitate brain connection with the external world.

    • These bursts differ from longer REM-alpha arousals (with EMG changes) that induce complete arousal and sleep fragmentation.
