Background:

  • Intractable abdominal pain from intraabdominal malignancy often proves resistant to pharmacological treatments.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To describe the technique and outcomes of CT-guided celiac plexus neurolysis for intractable abdominal pain in patients with intraabdominal malignancy.
  • To evaluate the safety and efficacy of alcohol-based celiac plexus block.

Main Methods:

  • CT-guided celiac plexus neurolysis was performed on 28 patients with inoperable or recurrent intraabdominal malignancies using anterior, posterior, or transaortic approaches with absolute alcohol.
  • Pain levels were assessed using a visual analog scale before and after the procedure.

Main Results:

  • No major complications were reported. Mild hypotension occurred in 18% and transient diarrhea in 21% of patients.
  • Seventy-five percent (75%) of patients experienced some pain relief, with 61% achieving good pain relief.

Conclusions:

  • CT-guided celiac plexus block with alcohol is a safe and effective method for managing intractable abdominal pain in patients with intraabdominal malignancy.
