Area of Science:

  • Psychology
  • Adolescent Health
  • Neurodevelopmental Disorders

Background:

  • Psychopathology is a significant concern in adolescent populations.
  • Understanding the relationship between activity levels and mental health is crucial for early intervention.
  • Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a common neurodevelopmental disorder affecting adolescents.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between activity levels and general psychopathology in high school students.
  • To determine the prevalence of potential ADHD symptoms in the adolescent sample.
  • To explore if adolescents with ADHD symptoms exhibit higher levels of psychopathology.

Main Methods:

  • A cohort of 289 high school students participated in the study.

Related Experiment Videos

  • The Wender Utah Rating Scale (WURS) assessed activity levels and identified potential ADHD.
  • The Symptom Check List-90-R (SCL-90-R) measured general psychopathology.
  • Main Results:

    • 14.18% of students scored above the threshold for ADHD on the WURS (WURS(+)).
    • WURS(+) students demonstrated significantly higher scores on all SCL-90-R subscales compared to WURS(-) students.
    • Adolescents with ADHD symptoms exhibited overlapping symptomatology with depression.

    Conclusions:

    • A notable prevalence of ADHD symptoms exists in the adolescent population studied.
    • ADHD symptoms in adolescents are strongly associated with broader psychopathological issues.
    • Findings suggest a significant comorbidity between ADHD and other mental health conditions, including depression, in adolescents.
