Background:

Colonoscopy insertion is challenging in 10-20% of cases due to anatomical variations.
Endoscope shaft flexibility can aid cecal intubation.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate the efficacy of a new variable stiffness (VS) colonoscope.
To compare the VS colonoscope with a conventional model regarding intubation time and patient comfort.

Main Methods:

Randomized trial comparing conventional Olympus CF200HL with a VS colonoscope.
Measured intubation time, use of stiffening function, and patient pain scores.

Main Results:

VS colonoscope showed quicker intubation (median 6:32 vs 10:35) and lower pain scores (median 7 vs 24).
Fewer incomplete examinations occurred with the VS colonoscope.
Stiffening function was effective in 15 of 23 applications.

Conclusions:

The VS colonoscope improves intubation efficiency and patient experience.
Variable stiffness technology offers advantages in challenging colonoscopies.
Further studies should compare VS scopes with newer, less stiff models.
