Area of Science:

  • Dermatology
  • Allergy and Immunology

Background:

  • Topical corticosteroid reactions are common in patch testing (>1%).
  • Systemic reactions to oral corticosteroids are considered uncommon.

Observation:

  • A 45-year-old woman reported a generalized cutaneous eruption after oral prednisolone administration.
  • The patient's history suggested a link between oral corticosteroid intake and widespread skin reaction.

Findings:

  • Patch testing with prednisolone eye drops yielded a positive result.
  • This indicates a potential hypersensitivity to prednisolone.

Implications:

  • Highlights the possibility of systemic hypersensitivity reactions to oral corticosteroids.
  • Suggests patch testing may be valuable in diagnosing corticosteroid-induced generalized eruptions.
