Area of Science:

  • Public Health
  • Epidemiology
  • Sociology

Background:

  • Premature mortality linked to alcohol consumption is a significant public health issue in former Soviet Union countries.
  • Understanding alcohol consumption patterns and their drivers in the Baltic Republics is crucial for targeted interventions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate self-reported alcohol consumption (beer, wine, spirits) in Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania.
  • To identify socioeconomic and demographic determinants of weekly alcohol intake in the Baltic States.

Main Methods:

  • Cross-sectional surveys conducted in 1997 among representative adult samples (ages 19-64) in Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania.
  • Logistic regression analyses were used to determine the odds of weekly alcohol consumption based on age, ethnicity, location, education, and income.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Weekly alcohol consumption varied significantly by country and sex, with men reporting higher rates than women across all Baltic States.
  • Alcohol consumption decreased with age in both sexes and increased with income in women.
  • Ethnic differences in alcohol consumption were observed in Estonia, with individuals of Russian ethnicity reporting lower odds of weekly consumption compared to Estonians.

Conclusions:

  • Around 50% of men and 17% of women in the Baltic States reported weekly alcohol intake.
  • Age and income emerged as the most consistent factors influencing the likelihood of weekly alcohol consumption.
  • Ethnic disparities in alcohol consumption patterns were specifically identified in Estonia.
