Area of Science:

  • Tropical medicine
  • Public health
  • Epidemiology

Context:

  • Assessed malaria prophylaxis attitudes and practices in expatriate families in Abidjan, Cote d'Ivoire in 1998.
  • Included 4990 subjects of various ages attending French and international schools.
  • Highlighted low usage of effective preventive measures like bed nets (7.5%).

Purpose:

  • To evaluate the current malaria prophylaxis strategies among expatriates in a high-risk area.
  • To identify effective and ineffective prevention methods used by expatriate families.
  • To inform public health initiatives for improved malaria prevention education.

Summary:

  • Drug prophylaxis use decreased with age, with 40.5% of families reporting use.
  • Ineffective or dangerous substances were sometimes used, and malarial attack incidence increased with length of stay.
  • Chloroquine and proguanil combination was the most effective drug prophylaxis (20.8% attack rate vs. 43.2% with no prophylaxis).

Impact:

  • Identified a need for more accurate and adapted information on malaria prevention, particularly regarding bed nets and drug efficacy.
  • Emphasized the importance of targeted health education for expatriate populations.
  • Suggests that prolonged stays (over 10 years) may negate the benefits of chemoprophylaxis, warranting further investigation.
