Coasting with sevoflurane anesthesia is a simple, effective technique for maintaining anesthesia during short procedures. This method allows for minimal fresh gas flow and can serve as a bridge to other low-flow anesthesia techniques.

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the clinical feasibility of a sevoflurane "coasting" technique for temporary anesthesia maintenance.
  • To evaluate coasting as a method following overpressure induction.

  • Prospective clinical study involving 12 patients (ASA I-III) undergoing peripheral procedures.
  • Sevoflurane overpressure induction followed by a reduction in fresh gas flow (FGF) to 0.5 L/min with the vaporizer turned off (coasting).

  • Anesthesia depth was adequate for laryngeal mask airway insertion approximately 3.4 minutes after induction.
