    Summary

    Antibody-dependent cell immunity to the lymphocyte system (ABCIL) is a B lymphocyte function, not solely antibody production. This immune response is impaired in antibody deficiency but normal in cellular immunodeficiency.

    Background:

    • Antibody-dependent cell immunity to the lymphocyte system (ABCIL) is mediated by non-thymus-processed cells in animals.
    • Its role and clinical utility in human immunodeficiency (ID) syndromes require investigation.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the role of ABCIL in human immunodeficiency.
    • To assess the clinical usefulness of ABCIL testing.

    Main Methods:

    • Assessed ABCIL in 25 patients with various ID syndromes.
    • Measured lysis of 51Cr-labeled lymphocytes coated with HL-A-specific antibody.
    • Expressed cytotoxicity as percentage of 51Cr released.

    Main Results:

    • Patients with antibody deficiency (n=10) showed significantly reduced ABCIL (7-9+/-2) compared to normals (20+/-2).

  • ABCIL function correlated with peripheral blood B cell percentage (r=0.74; P<0.05).
