Area of Science:

  • Neurosurgery
  • Trauma Surgery
  • Emergency Medicine

Background:

  • Intracranial penetrating injuries pose significant risks.
  • Screwdriver-related brain trauma is a rare but severe form of injury.

Observation:

  • Presents four cases of intracranial penetrating injuries caused by screwdrivers.
  • Highlights the potential for delayed diagnosis due to subtle or overlooked entry wounds.
  • Notes that limited patient history can exacerbate diagnostic challenges.

Findings:

  • Two of the four patients experienced fatal outcomes.
  • The remaining patients sustained significant functional deficits.
  • Underscores the critical importance of thorough examination to identify small entry wounds.

Implications:

  • Emphasizes the need for heightened clinical suspicion in cases of suspected head trauma.
  • Suggests that early and accurate diagnosis is crucial for improving patient outcomes in penetrating brain injuries.
  • Recommends meticulous wound assessment to avoid overlooking potentially devastating injuries.
