Area of Science:

  • Orthopedic Surgery
  • Hand Surgery
  • Traumatology

Background:

  • Volar dislocation of the metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joint is an exceptionally uncommon injury.
  • Understanding the biomechanics and typical presentations of MCP joint dislocations is crucial for diagnosis and treatment.

Observation:

  • A case of volar dislocation of the left index finger's metacarpophalangeal joint in a 44-year-old male is presented.
  • Initial closed reduction attempts were unsuccessful, necessitating surgical intervention.

Findings:

  • Open reduction and internal fixation were performed using a combined dorsal and volar surgical approach.
  • The surgical technique successfully addressed the complex volar dislocation of the metacarpophalangeal joint.

Implications:

  • This case highlights the challenges and successful management of rare volar MCP joint dislocations.
  • Reviewing similar cases aids in refining treatment strategies for these unusual hand injuries.
  • Effective surgical management is essential for restoring function after complex metacarpophalangeal joint dislocations.
