Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of a new medical-grade cyanoacrylate tissue adhesive in improving ossicular chain reconstruction outcomes.
  • To assess the histotoxicity of octylcyanoacrylate in a rat model.

Main Methods:

  • Ossicular chain reconstruction was performed in 13 rats, with the incus interposed using octylcyanoacrylate in the adhesive group (n=7) and without adhesive in the control group (n=6).
  • Pre- and postoperative auditory brainstem response (ABR) testing was conducted.

    • Ossicular chain integrity was maintained in 100% of the surviving adhesive group rats compared to 50% in the control group.
    • Mild foreign body reaction was noted around the ossicular chain in the adhesive group, with no other significant histopathologic differences.

    Conclusions:

    • Octylcyanoacrylate significantly enhances hearing results in ossicular chain reconstruction.
    • The new adhesive demonstrates a favorable safety profile with no apparent histotoxicity in this animal model.
    • This medical-grade tissue adhesive represents a promising advancement for otologic surgical procedures.
