Granular corneal dystrophy recurred in two patients after corneal grafts. Deposits appeared in the donor cornea

    Area of Science:

    • Ophthalmology
    • Corneal Diseases
    • Histopathology

    Background:

    • Granular corneal dystrophy is a rare inherited eye condition.
    • Corneal transplantation is a common treatment for advanced corneal diseases.

    Observation:

    • Two patients experienced recurrence of granular corneal dystrophy after sequential penetrating corneal grafts.
    • Deposits were observed in the donor cornea stroma and subepithelially.

    Findings:

    • Recurrence of granular corneal dystrophy was confirmed in both patients post-keratoplasty.
    • Electron microscopy revealed characteristic rod-shaped, electron-dense deposits consistent with granular dystrophy.

    Implications:

    • Corneal grafts may not prevent recurrence of granular corneal dystrophy.

    Related Experiment Videos

  • Further research is needed to understand recurrence mechanisms and develop preventative strategies.
